In modern times, technology and innovation have made textiles and apparel more wearable, efficient, practical and desirable. However there are some areas of the apparel sector where products made in the traditional way have become today’s 'simply must have’ items.

Such a product is made from Cashmere.

The Original Cashmere Scarf Company development team have the equivalent of 55 years experience of Cashmere fibres and yarns and the functions and processes that are needed to produce the most exquisite final product. Cashmere is the name given to the fine fibres collected from the mountain goat (capra hircus) in the higher regions of Inner Mongolia China. The goat is a hardy durable animal that thrives in extreme conditions and can endure the intense cold, it’s soft underbelly producing fine downey fibres. These fibres are harvested and graded (originally by hand) into three categories, white, grey and brown. The white fibre is the most sought after and exclusive of the clip. Each Cashmere goat produces just enough fine fibre to make one of our scarves

Cashmere has been coveted for centuries for its lightness, softness and warmth next to the skin, in relation to its weight warmer than most other noble fibres. Since Roman times cashmere has been used to produce luxurious woven scarves and shawls. Even today’s movers and shakers of the fashion world recognise the value of this most noble of fibres.

We produce beautifully luxurious cashmere scarves in the traditional way. Fine micron white Chinese cashmere fibre is selected from the merchants of Inner Mongolia. Fibre of no more than 15-micron diameter is considered the finest. White fibre because of its ability to produce superb light and pastel shades. The white fibre is dyed in the traditional way, but using the latest eco-friendly dyestuffs. This produces colour of remarkable depth and bloom.

The dyed white fibre is then spun into yarn using the traditional ‘mule’ process which spins the fibre without bruising or stressing, producing yarns that are level and even. The yarn is then woven on dedicated weaving looms to achieve a beautiful fabric with unbelievably soft handling characteristics. The fabric is then milled in the traditional manner to develop the finish achieving the soft luxurious handle associated with finest cashmere. Experienced cutters fashion the Cashmere Scarf from the fabric cutting and fringing by hand for the perfect finish.

Micron. This is the measure used to describe the diameter of the cashmere fibre. Typically cashmere fibres are between14 and 18 Micron The lower the number the finer the fibre.

We use fibres of 15.5 micron or less

1 micron is equal to I millionth of 1 metre

Fibre Dyeing. This is considered to be the best way to achieve deep and lustrous colour definition, which is long lasting.

Spinning This is the process which turn the fibres (literally) into yarn

Highest quality yarn is achieved by using a machine called a spinning Mule

Weaving

The fabric is woven on dedicated looms calibrated to achieve the maximum strength without stressing the fibres.

The result is an evenly finished fabric of 145 picks and 150 ends per 10 cm with superb handling characteristics.

Finishing

The fabric is then finished in the traditional way to achieve a high degree of ‘loft’ characterised by the luxurious ‘ripple effect’ patina.
